Prior to his retirement in 1990, he worked for more than 34 years at The Enterprise as a circulation manager. Mr. McSweeney came to work at The Enterprise as a part-time truck driver in 1956 and in his 34 years with the firm rose through various positions in the shipping room to the position of circulation manager. He also formerly worked for various news agencies, which distributed Boston newspapers locally among them the Brockton News Agency, Maguire Brothers and Mullare News Agency.
Born In Brockton, he was the son of the late Terrence P. and Susan (Flynn) McSweeney. He grew up in Brockton and was a 1938 graduate of Brockton High School. He moved to Abington 50 years ago.
Mr. McSweeney served in the U.S. Army during World War II, including overseas duty. While in the Army during the war he served in the 97th Field Hospital Medical Detachment. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon.
In his younger days, McSweeney was an active athlete playing softball with the Kay Jewelers and YMCA softball teams.
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday (February 11, 2004) at St. Bridget's Church, 455 Plymouth Street (Route 58), in ABINGTON at 9:00 a.m. Interment will take place in Massachusetts National cemetery in Bourne.
