Mary Ann Pickering was born on September 9, 1815, in Asenby, England. She married William Woodill and was widowed. Then she married George Ward in 1836. They were the parents of 10 children.


They farmed the Woodill farm until 1851, when they moved to Mitchell, Ontario. In 1871, George, Sr. was the senior member of a 4-unit wagon train that arrived at Marcus, Iowa, on August 28, 1871. George and Mary Ann brought their large family to Amherst Township. They lived in their wagons until small homes could be erected. They were pioneers in Marcus, Amherst Township.


Then they moved to Glasco, Cloud County, Kansas, for Mary's health. They lived there until George's death. Mary moved to Garden Grove, California, to be with her son.


Mary Ann Ward passed away on September 15, 1895, in Garden Grove, California, at age 80.
