AURORA, Ill. - Gerald ''Jerry'' Lee Brest, 63, formerly of Brookfield, passed away at 2:24 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Ill.

He was born Feb. 9, 1947, in Sharon, Pa., the son of Robert S. and Mary Pasquerilla Brest.

He attended Brookfield Schools and was a graduate of Youngstown State University. As a veteran of the Vietnam War, he received a Purple Heart medal for his courageous efforts and sacrifices in defense of his nation.

Following his time served in Vietnam, Jerry dedicated much of his life to fighting for veterans' rights and benefits. His legal actions in defense of veterans ultimately helped countless victims of the war. He was also a founder of the organization Fathers for Equal Rights in Trumbull County.

In his free time, Jerry greatly enjoyed traveling, fishing, skiing and spending time with friends and loved ones.

Jerry is survived by his daughters, Kelly Jacobson and her husband, David, Joeli Collins and her husband, Chris, and Breana Brest; his mother, Mary Brest; brother, Robert "Butch" Brest Jr. and his wife, Joanne; sister, Susan Fonagy and her husband, Dr. Joseph; former wife, Ginger Coates Brest; his grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to him as "UJ."

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, in 1991.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Madasz Funeral Chapel, 6923 Warren-Sharon Road, Brookfield, Ohio.

Friends and family may call from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service.

As an expression of sympathy, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.org/ or to the Brookfield Public Library.
