Employment: Seamstress, Nanny in Texas & Anoka, Chicken Picker in Anoka

Grandma had many babysitting jobs; she even babysat for several Anoka doctors while they took vacations. She worked for the Ray Brock chicken farm in Anoka. When shredding corn husks for mattresses, Grandma wore overalls, that was the only time she wore the pants in the family.

Grandma told me that when she her children were young, she would get lonely or upset with grandpa once in awhile. She took her pony and babies and drove to Hampton, MN to visit her mother where she stayed until grandpa came to take her back home. She always counted her kids before leaving anywhere to be sure to have them all. All her life, she was so proud of her kids.

During her retirement years, she entered her handiwork in the state and county fairs, winning lots of ribbons and money. She was the happiest when lots of her kids came over to visit and play cards or dice.

Barb's memories
Grandma Dehen used to hum a lot and when disturbed in the kitchen, she could be heard to say, "Gut in hemo!" or some such spelling. It means "God in heaven!".

Her homemade bread was unbeatable as were her pies, cakes, preserves. No wonder she was always humming.

When dad worked on the Alaskan highway, we lived with Grandma and Grandpa on the farm. I remember Grandma rocked me until they lived in Robbinsdale and my legs could reach the floor. I figured it was time to stop that happy activity. Then we played cards and dice. Grandma like to play "Snake Eyes" and Rummy. She never tired of cards or company.

Whenever anyone came to visit, she quickly went to open the door for them and give them a hug.

She was loved my grandchildren and great grandchildren alike.

What a blessing she was!
