Erastus was born in Bloomindale, DuPage County, Illinois shortly after his parents moved to Illinois from New York State. The family tradition is that Erastus was visiting his sister in Knox County, Ohio when he met his future wife, Elizabeth Ebersole. They married in Fredericktown in 1857 and then came to Pecatonica in Winnebago County, Illinois where Erastus's parents had settled by that time. Their first two children were born in Pecatonica.

Then, at the start of the Civil War, Erastus joined an Illinois company and served in the Infantry and Cavalry during the war. After living in Chicago briefly, they moved to Missouri and Erastus worked as a builder. When the Chicago fire struck, they moved back to Chicago and Erastus helped with the reconstruction of the city.

By 1880 the family had relocated to South Dakota and moved fairly soon to Chamberlain in Brule County where Erastus again worked as a builder and was joined in that trade by his son, Hal. Erastus and Hal built many of the original buildings in Chamberlain.
