After leaving his homeland of Norway to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Haakon would meet up with a childhood friend, Julia Josephine Jacobsen. They married in Murray, Utah and raised a family. 10 of their 14 children lived to adulthood. Haakon was a jeweler by trade in his native Norway but in America he had to work in a smelter.
