Emma was born in Switzerland to John Gustav Kruger and Elisa Schneider. Emma's mother died shortly after her birth and her father moved to America to start a life for them there. Emma was raised by her grandmother Schneider for about 5 years and then by her Kruger grandparents in Germany until at 8 years of age, she traveled across the ocean to America and then half way across the continent to South Dakota to be re-united with her father there. In 1903 she married Paul Thurlow and raised a family of 10 children with him in western South Dakota before finally settling in Seattle in the late 1940's.
