Kate is a daughter of Charles Rinaldo Floyd and his 1st wife, Catherine Sophia Powell. Originally named Catherine Isabel Floyd, she was renamed Catherine Isabel Sophia Autossee Floyd after the death of sister, and renamed Catherine Sophia Floyd after the death of her mother. She lived at Bellevue with her grandparents; she was given piano lessons by her aunt, Sarah Catherine Floyd DeLarocheaulion, who lived in Glynn County, Georgia.

"About a month ago, we spent a week in Glynn County with my daughter DeLaroche, whether we carried and left, our Dear little Catherine to stay with and be instructed by her Aunt, who is quite an accomplished Lady--having always lived with us, and under the soothing care of her Grandmother, she was unwilling to part with us for a day... Kate is a nice Child, tall, slim and meager... well marked features - an affectionate heart, full of the electric fluid--Generous in the extreme, of great vivacity, quick to comprehend anything... and a fine ear for music" (Excerpt of a letter dated March, 7, 1834, from Gen John Floyd at Bellevue Place near Jeffersonton to Miss E J Caldwell at Readfield Corner in Maine, The Floyd Letters 1823-1841, compiled by John Hughes Corson).

"Catherine also died at the age of seventeen at the residence of her grand-parents, Nov. 21st, 1842." (A Little Family History by Mary Hazzard Floyd Hamilton, The Morning News Press, 1906, p. 14)
