Attended Leesburg Va High School where he played 3 sports. Basketball, baseball and football. Attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he was the quarterback for the football team. Spent 3 years in the Army Air Corp during World War 2 where he began to play catcher during baseball games with fellow corpmen. He had hopes of playing professional football when he got out of military. Instead was offered a position as catcher for the Chicago Cubs April 15, 1952. He was 28 years old at the time. He ended up playing for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Braves. He injured his knee sliding while playing for a minor league (Triple A Montreal). Batting Average .290. He was selected for the National All Star Team. He finished his career in 1953 with .260 lifetime average.
