US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Wisconsin's 8th District in the United States House of Representatives from 1997 to 1999. He attended Northern Michigan University where he received his B.A., and was an information specialist while serving in the United States Army. Following his discharge, he had a career of more than thirty years as a journalist and television broadcaster in Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin. After his unsuccessful bid for reelection to Congress, Johnson was appointed by President Clinton to serve as 36th Director of the US Mint. His tenure in that capacity lasted from May 2000 until August 2001. He died from a heart attack.
