Merle, age 85, of Red Wing passed away Tuesday at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. He was born the son of Louis & Viola Miller on Sept. 25, 1923, in Monona, IA.
He grew up on a farm in rural Monona and graduated from Monona High School. Merle served in the Army during World War II in the heavy artillery unit at Fort Sill, OK.
He married Betty Bruehahn at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana, IA, on July 23, 1948. They farmed north of Luana for more than 30 years. Merle also sold Archer Oil for many years. Merle and Betty moved to Luana, where he worked at Luana Creamery and then at Corner Tap in Monona. He served on the Luana town council for several years. From 1994-2005, they were snowbirds, spending winters in Mesa, AZ. In 2005, they moved to Red Wing and have since resided at Jordan Towers.
Merle is survived by his wife of 61 years, A son and his wife , two daughters and their husbands and five grandchildren.
