Carolina arrived from London with her parents and several siblings to the US in 1797, her family then settling in Georgetown, in Washington, DC. After her father's death in 1802, she moved with her mother and the remaining unmarried Johnson daughters into the home of her sister, Nancy, and her husband, Walter Hellen Jr., in Georgetown, where she remained until her first marriage.
She first married widower Andrew Buchanan in Boston on 21 July 1807. Following his death, she married Nathaniel Frye in Washington, DC on 3 July 1817.
Her and her second husband's graves are in the same section of Rock Creek Cemetery, near the shared Hellen Family plot where her mother, two of her sisters, and brother are also buried.
