Marguerite Fellows, age 86, Monticello, Florida, died on June 4, 2009. She was a beloved mother of Dow Roland, Fort Pierce, FL, Sharon (Shari) Roland, Monticello, FL, Charles (Chuck)Roland(deceased), Cathleen Cole, Monticello, FL, Jayne Bolling, Orlando, FL; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Marguerite was owner and founder of Marguerite's Florist. On November 1976, the business opened on Granada Blvd., in Ormond Beach, FL and later became the first shop in the Trail's Shopping Center. The Florist shop is winner of multiple awards and is now owned and operated by her granddaughter, Monica Yates, AIFD. Marguerite was renowned not only for creative and outstanding work in the Florist community, but will always be remembered for her elaborate and fun filled parties at her home in Astor, FL on the St. John's River. Born on December 8, 1922 in Trenton, FL, she was the daughter of Horace and Myrle Gay; and had a brother, Horace Gay, Jr. With her family being descendents from old Pioneer families: Colson, Dell, Mathews, Gay and Dupuis. President Chester A. Arthur gave her great-grandfather, William H. Gay, a patent to land east of the city limits of Trenton, FL on June 13, 1884. During the early 1900's her grandparents, Samuel G. Gay and Callie Colson Gay were among the first families to produce perishable fruits and vegetables on a large scale comprising several counties including Gilchrist, Levy and Alachua Counties. They were the first to own a tractor, as well as having the first electric light system. After WWII, Marguerite and her first husband, Howard L. Roland (deceased), settled in Newberry, FL to raise their family. Marguerite was a legal secretary and later secretary for the IBEW in Gainesville. She was also a member of the Pilot Club. In the early 1970's, she married O.E. (Sonny) Fellows and relocated to Daytona Beach, and then later to Astor, FL. After the civil war, Marguerite's maternal grandparents, the Dupuis family, migrated from Kentucky to then Alachua County. Around 1894 her grandfather, Sid Dupuis, and grandmother, Allie Dupuis, (a milliner) along with his brother, Dr. John Dupuis, established a general, store, pharmacy, medical facility and the White Belt Dairy in Miami, FL. Marguerite was a "die hard" Gator fan! Her passing is a painful and great loss to her family and to those who knew her. But as she would say during hard times "This to shall pass and let the sun go down and see what tomorrow brings!" Services will be held at Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 580 George W. Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 13.
