Religious figure. He was fourth president of the Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society, and a member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was attending the University of Cincinnati, preparing to become a Presbyterian minister, when he came in contact with Jehovah's Witnesses through his older brother. He separated himself from the Presbyterian Church and became associated with the Bible Students, as Jehovah's Witnesses were then known. He was baptized on Nov. 30, 1913, ordaining him as a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses. The following year, he left the university to take up the full time ministry. On June 1, 1920, he became a member of the Brooklyn headquarters staff. In 1945, Mr. Franz became vice president of the Watch Tower Society and other associated bodies. Upon the death of Nathan H. Knorr in 1977, he became president, and served in that capacity until his death. In his lifetime, Mr. Franz saw the number of Jehovah's Witnesses increase from a few thousand to some four and a half million by 1992. He enjoyed many assignments, including speaking at international conventions and visiting branches and missionary homes in many parts of the world. Memorial services were held on Monday, Dec. 28,1992 at the Kingdom Hall at world headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. The talk was given by Albert D. Schroeder of the Governing Body.
