David Nash Moyer, son of David B. and Rebecca Nash Moyer, was born in Lincoln Co., Ontario, June 12, 1849, and died in Chicago, Dec. 14, 1903, aged 54 years, 6 months and 2 days. The immediate cause of his death being heart failure.
Until the age of 19, Mr. Moyer lived on his father's farm in Canada, receiving his education in the public schools of the neighborhood. In 1868 he left his father's home and from that time until the time of his death he was almost constantly travelling in this and foreign countries, mostly as a travelling salesman.
On the 12th day of August, 1875, he was married to Margaret Tweddell of Quebec. To Mr. and Mrs. Moyer were born five children; four sons and one daughter, all of whom are living and were at the bedside of the father when he died.
The children are Ernest of Naperville; David, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Leland, of Naperville and Reginald and Margaret who reside at home. There are two grand children - a son and daughter of the oldest son, Ernest.
Mr. Moyer was the second youngest of eight children. His oldest brother, Samuel, was for many years a prominent minister of the Evangelical association in Canada. A sister, Mrs. Anna Gross, is living in New Jersey; another sister, Elizabeth, is living in Buffalo, N.Y. A brother, Eli, is living in Toronto, and another brother, Simeon, is living at St. Catharines, Ont.
In 1875 Mr. Moyer moved with his family to California and resided in different cities on the Pacific coast for five and a half years. In 1881 he returned with his wife and three sons, born in California, to Canada. In 1886 the family moved to Naperville, where they resided for 10 years. In 1896 they moved to Chicago, where they have since resided.
Mr. Moyer lived a very strenuous, active life. While deeply interested in his family, his business took him away from home most of the time.
The parents of Mr. Moyer had been Mennonites, but in 1849 united with the Evangelical association. They were devoted christian people. David, during a visit in Buck Co., Pa., in 1868 attended a revival lmeeting conducted in the Evangelical church and was converted to God. While in California he united with the Methodist church. After removing to Naperville he united with the Grace church, in fact being one of the original members. On moving to Chicago he united with the Western Ave. M. E. church, of which church he was a member at the time of his death.
Mr. Moyer was a member of the Masonic Order and the local lodge was in attendance at the funeral and acted as pall bearers.
Funeral services were held at the house at 9:45 Wednesday morning by Rev. C. G. Unangst of the Adams St. church and in Grace church at 1:00 p.m. by the pastor, E. S. Woodring.
