His mother was Martha D. (Lander) Pierce (youngest child of Edward and Eliza [West] Lander, born June 24th, 1833 and died in Portland in Dec 1873).

Josiah is interred in his wife's family crypt at the Dahlgren Chapel. The chapel is located at the Summit of Turner's Gap in western Maryland between Middletown and Boonsboro.
