His nickname was B.J. and he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1941, shortly after the Pearl Harbor Attack. He served in the Pacific campaign and was involved in the liberation of the Phillipine Islands. Like many vets, he was unwilling to discuss his military service and once when his daughter asked him about it, quietly said, "I didn't do much." B.J. was wounded in his right leg by a Japanese sniper while sitting in front of a military hospital where he was recovering from malaria; and received the Purple Heart. He was proud of his service to his country and was a very active member in the VFW for many years.
B.J.was a shy, quiet man who prayed daily for his loved ones. Of his two brothers and six sisters, today in 2010 only one sister survives at 91 years old, Valasta. In July, 2010 another sister, Hattie, passed who would have achieved 100 in November.
He would have loved to see his first great-grandchild, the fourth generation of "Bens"., born in 2010 to his grandson; and would have happily bragged about his granddaughter following her father into medicine.
B.J. Mrnustik was my father; and I am proud that I am his daughter. My greatest regret is that he became ill just as we were making plans for him to move to the NW for at least a few years to live with me. I miss him. It's easy to become a father; it takes a special man to be a Daddy. He was special.
