James Ambrose Ross was born 20 May 1903 in Cheyenne, Wyoming and died 28 December 1928. He was killed in an automobile accident near Saratoga, Wyoming, about 100 mils west of Cheyenne. Ambrose married Thelma Hinds,daughter of Frederick and Hattie Lenore Brown Hinds, on 22 September 1925 in Fort Collins, Colorado. The couple had one child, William Ambrose Ross, born in 1928 in Arizona.

Ambrose's siblings were: his twin brother, George Tayloe Ross(1903-1991), Alfred Duff Ross (1905-1906), and Bradford Ross (1913-1936).

Both of Ambrose's parents were governors of Wyoming. His mother, Nellie Tayloe Ross was the first woman in the United States to be elected state governor.
