dated July 30, 1912:
The body of James Logan Herrin who was drowned Sunday night in the Illinois River, was found about 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the channel of the river about four and one half miles from Meredosia. Herrin, who was a shell fisher, was on the river late Sunday night and that was the last he was seen alive. His boat was found Monday morning floating in the river about half way between Meredosia and the locks. In the launch were a straw hat and a black felt hat, a jug of water and part of a bottle of beer. As soon as the boat was discovered a diligent search was begun for the body. Edward Williams, who was in the party of searchers, as he was rowing near a channel saw the body balanced up in the water. He took it in his boat and hauled it to shore. Cash amounting to $3.45 and 12 pearls were found on the man's person. Mr. Herrin had lived near Meredosia for the past five years. He was about 45 years old and leaves a wife and several children. He was a member of the I.O.O.F.M.W.A. and Order Of Moose and was a man held in high regard. Coroner Skinner was notified Tuesday afternoon and went to Meredosia last night and held an inquest. The jury was composed of L. W. Davis, foreman; John Davis, William Summers, Harry Lafever, Oliver Winningham and C. Large. The verdict was that Mr. Herrin "came to his death by accidental drowning in the Illinois River about four and one-half miles from Meredosia."
He married MARY MATILDA RICKETTS 15 Mar 1892 in Warrick County, Indiana, daughter of JOHN RICKETTS and SARAH OSBORNE. She was born 16 Jul 1877 in Warrick County, Indiana, and died 10 Jan 1959 in Meredosia, Morgan County, Illinois.
