Born on April 10, 1914, in Valencia, Spain, Archbishop Emilio Benavent Escuín studied philosophy and letters and the University of Madrid, desiring to become Teaching, however he later underwent Theological Studies in the University of Commodilla, during the difficult period of the Spanish Civil War, from where he obtained a doctorate in theology. He was ordained presbyter aged 29 on July 18, 1943 and was incardinated with the clergy of the Diocese of Málaga.

Within the named diocese, Don Emilio served as Coadjatur of the parish of Santiago and aviation chaplain while serving also as professor within the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza. In 1946 he was named Canon of Málaga's Cathedral Chapter, appointed professor of theology, Patristics and Sacred Arts in the Diocesan Seminary of the Diocese and was furthermore nominated as counselor of the Juventud de Acción Católica.

In 1951 he was assigned to the parish of San Patricio, at the Barrio de Huelin where he profoundly dedicated his entire social, material and spiritual services to the emarginated people of the suburbs, managing to see the parish church being built together with a school, dispensary, house of Catholic Action and a parish house. He also took care in the building and inauguration of a priestly residence and to the development of rural teaching.

At the age of 40, on December 6, 1954, Pope Pius XII, nominated Don Emilio as Auxiliary Bishop of Don Ángel Herrera Oria for the Diocese of Málaga. He received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Cercina on February 13, 1955, from Cardinal Ildebrando Antoniutti, Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, assisted by Bishops Rafael Alvarez Lara and Antonio Añoveros Ataún.

From then, he served as vicar general and rector of the Diocesan Seminary and initiated, in name of the Bishop, the pastoral visits to the diocese and to the rural schools. He also occupied important charges within the Spanish Episcopal Conference.

In 1968, he inaugurated the church of San Gabriel and in 1970, the new Cistercian Convent of the Encarnación in El Atabal. In 1961 he had already inaugurated the parish Church of Our Lady of Fátima, which was followed by the laying of the foundation stones of the future parishes of Stella Maris and Santa Rosa de Lima.

On April 7, 1967, following the retirement of Msgr. Ángel Herrera Oria, Escuín succeeded as Bishop of the Diocese of Málaga, after serving as Apostolic Administrator, a position he kept for a few months, as on August 26, 1968, he was appointed Coadjutor of the Metropolitan See of Granada with the Title of Archbishop of the Titular See of Tiburnia. At the age of 59, on February 3, 1974, he succeeded to the Archdiocese of Granada, following the demise of Archbishop Rafael García y García de Castro.

On May 25, 1977 he was named Titular Archbishop of the See of Maximiana in Numidia and Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Spain, a position he kept until his resignation on October 27, 1982.

Following his retirement, Archbishop Escuín resided in Málaga, where he exercised his priestly ministry in the parish of San Gabriel.

Monsignor Benavent Escuín died at the venerable age of 93, on Friday, January 4, 2008, at 11 am., Requiem Mass was said at Málaga's Cathedral on Saturday, January 5, at noon and interment following in the church of Saint Patrick, also in Málaga, next to the remains of his mother as he had personally desired.
