Thomas was third child of James Duncan Piety and Eleanor Harned. He was born 01 Sep 1823 on the family farm, about one-fourth mile north of Middletown (now known as Prairie Creek IN). His parents had settled there shortly after their marriage. Thomas helped on the farm and attended school for short periods during the winter at a school established about 1823. The log school building had been built northwest of Middletown, with Nicholas Yeager Sr as the first teacher.

On 22 Mar 1846, Thomas married Emily Thomas and they located on a farm near Hauger Hill, one mile north of Middleton. On the farm was a log house which they used for their first home. They lived at that log house until the death of Thomas on 11 Oct 1852, after only seven years of marriage. In addition to farming, Thomas had a mill located on Prairie Creek, which flowed between his farm and his father's. Thomas had a habit of taking a swim in the mill pond after his day's work, and on one of these occasions he contracted pneumonia and died shortly thereafter.
