Born in Santander, Cantabria, Spain, to Marcos Ortiz Santos and Antonia Portella Crespo, most of his lifetime is unknown. He was married to Irene Horta and was the father to legendary Mexican actor and radio announcer Marcos Ortiz. Their only child was born on October 27, 1922, when he was 31 years and Irene was just 19. However, when their son was almost 7 months old, he died on Mexico City at the age of 32 on May 24, 1923, as a result of a liver cirrhosis.
