Stephen Harvey Fletcher, born Provo, Utah, Nov. 20, 1911, died Sun. January 6, 2008 at his home, of Causes Incident to Age, surrounded by his family. He was 96.



"Uncle Steve", as he was known to young and old alike, was a kind, generous and good natured person - truly a Christian gentleman.Stephen was the oldest son of Harvey and Lorena (Chipman) Fletcher. He married Dorothy Lillian Roberts, June 5, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. They were sealed on June 11th in the Salt Lake Temple. They had three children - Elizabeth Jean, William Stephen, Richard Curtis, and raised a niece, Christine Roberts. A student at Brigham Young University, 1928-30, he graduated from Columbia College, 1932, and received his LL.B. from Columbia Law, 1935. He then began a long and distinguished career as a public utility lawyer in the Bell System. First as an attorney for AT&T, 1935-40, then with N.Y. Telephone Co., 1940-45, returning to AT&T in 1945, where he became Assistant General Attorney, 1949, and General Attorney, 1949-51. In 1951 the family moved to Washington, DC when he became Vice President and Gen. Counsel for the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co.




In 1958, he returned to corporate headquarters in New York City as General Attorney for AT&T. He became V.P. and Gen. Counsel Western Electric Co. in 1963, until his retirement in 1976. During this time the family again lived in New Jersey, where he served as Bishop of the Short Hills Ward and later as Stake Patriarch. A member of the American Bar Association, he was chairman of the Public Utility section, 1961-62, Assistant Gen. Counsel of American Law Institute, American Society of International Law, American Judicature Society, Academy of Political Science, the Newcomen Society, Metropolitan Club (Washington); and the Cannon-Hinkley Group. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life. He served a Mission in western New York State during the early days of the Great Depression. In retirement he taught at the Reuben J. Clark Law School, BYU, and later helped start the Copyrights and Permissions Office of the Church in Salt Lake City.





Stephen is survived by three brothers, Dr. Harvey J. Fletcher, Dr. Paul C. Fletcher and Dr. Robert C. Fletcher; two children, William Stephen and Elizabeth Fletcher Crook, and niece Christine Roberts Cobb; 13 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, one brother (Dr. James C. Fletcher), a sister (Phyllis F. Firmage), and son Richard.




Funeral Services will be held on Fri. January 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Edgemont 8th Ward, 3050 Mojave Lane, Provo, Utah. Viewing will be held from 9:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m. prior to the Services at the Chapel.
Interment will be at the East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, Provo.
