LDS missionary Hiram M. Kimball was killed in the explosion of the boiler of the steam transport Milton Willis (aka Ada Hancock) in the Wilmington channel of San Pedro Harbor, Los Angeles County, California. His remains were recovered and he was buried in the Drum Barracks Cemetery alongside fellow LDS missionary Thomas Atkinson, who was also killed in the explosion. He had arrived in California from Salt Lake City with Thomas. Both were en route to the Sandwich Islands (Hawai'i). There is a cenotaph memorial (53904277) for Hiram on his wife's gravestone. He was the husband of Sarah Kimball.
