His marriage to Maggie Ross was published in the "Western Democrat", 5 Dec. 1865.

Civil War Service: "Previously served as Sergeant Major of the 45th Regiment NC Troops. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant of this company [Co. I, 37th Regiment] on August 1, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 15, 1862. Promoted to Captain on March 10, 1864. Captured near Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, April 9, 1865. Released at Johnson's Island on June 18, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance." NC Troops: 1861-1865, Vol. ___, p579.

His health did not return after his imprisonment, and he died in 1868 leaving one son, John William Elms. His widow married Leitner Shurley in 1873.
