He was the son of Eber Harlan[#2477 in the Harlan Book by Alpheus Harlan] and Catherine Hubbard.

Born in Lee Co, IA, the family moved to Clarke Co, IA to Fremont Twp, northeast of Osceola when William was a young boy.

He married Allie D. Kepner on 11 October 1888.

They did not have children, but they did raise a nephew of Allie's, Dr. Henry Finley Helm(s).

William's obituary reads "William S. Harlan, Lincoln resident since 1891 and former principal of the Waco schools, died at 9 o'clock Friday morning at his home 2420 Vine St. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday at the home, J.D. Parks officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Harlan was born on a farm at Hillsboro, Iowa and the family later moved to Osceola, IA. In 1878 he moved to York Co, NE where he taught in a sod school house several years. He was married in October 1880 to Miss Allie D. Kepner. The following year he was elected head of the Waco schools and served two years. Moving to Aurora, Mr. Harlan took charge of a hardware store and served four years as deputy postmaster and deputy county treasurer. He then entered the real estate and abstract business.
In 1891 Mr. Harlan joined the R.E. Moore Co. of Lincoln as land examiner. Six years later he became identified with the W.M. Leonard Co. as financial correspondence secretary of the Union Life Insurance Company, retiring in 1931. He was the oldest land examiner in the state at the time of his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Allie and three brothers, J.V. of Wichita, Kansas, Rev. Shirley Harlan of Missouri and Cash Harlan of Fredonia, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Harlan reared a nephew , Dr. Finley H. Helm.
The body is at Wadlow's."

Will was the older brother of my great grandmother, Emily Ellen Harlan Wiant.
