Harry Orphan was born in Zemenou, Greece either in 1894 or 1897 or 1898. Harry may have used the 1897 birth year to avoid being drafted in WWI. Harry claimed to be under 21 years old in March, 1917 when he fled from Edwardsville, Illinois, allegedly to evade the draft. Harry did eventually serve in WWI.

Harry immigrated from Greece via New York in 1912, settling in Miami, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1926. In 1930, Harry lived at the Leamington hotel and was employed as a waiter at its restaurant.

Harry was related to George Siorfanes and Louis Orphan, both residing in St. Louis, who are referred to Harry as "brothers" in their respective obituaries. There was another brother, Nicolas Siorfones, who lived in Zememou, Greece where Harry died. It is unknown how the Siorfones and Orphan families were associated.

On his WWII draft registration form, Harry lists his occupation as restaurant manager for the Westminister Buffet restaurant and saloon, St. Louis, located at 418 N Vandeventer Avenue.

Harry lived in St. Louis with a brother, Louis Orphan, who was a retired police officer. Exactly six months after Louis died on 15 Mar 1945, Harry married Polly Jane "Jennie" Lock[e], the widow of Saint Louis undertaker John Schmidt. Jennie was approximately 20 years older than Harry.

Harry is a great uncle of actress Dimitra Arliss.
