Durand Nelson "Joe" Betts, 76, of Greencastle, Pa., passed away at Meritus Medical Center on Sunday, June 3, 2018.

Born Dec. 13, 1941, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Jacob W. and Anna M. (Murray) Betts. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mary Jean Betts, on July 5, 2015.


Joe graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1959. He worked with Arnett's Lawn and Garden Service, then Bear's Lawn and Garden Center, retiring in 2008.

He is survived by one daughter, Dana F. Betts of Hagerstown; two sons, Joseph D. Betts of Hagerstown, and Nelson D. Betts and wife, Karen, of Falling Waters, W.Va.; one brother, Aubrey J. Betts and wife, Linda, of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.


In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Gossard and Phyllis Chedaster; and one brother, Jack Betts.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Rev. Milton Herrold will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
