Shelburne Free Press & Economist, Wednesday, May 20, 1959 S. J. NEWTON
Another link with the early pioneers of Mulmur Township was severed by the death in Shelburne District Hospital of Samuel Joseph Newton, son of the late John Newton and Margaret Hill, original pioneers of Mulmur. Although in failing health for some time, death came very suddenly on May 7th, 1959, after he had been in the hospital only two weeks.
Mr. Newton was born on lot 4, concession 3, Mulmur, and except for seven years, when he lived in Mono Township, his entire life was spent in the surrounding neighbourhood. He was born on February 15th, 1875.
On June 19th, 1908, he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Lindsay, who predeceased him in April of 1932. In politics, he took a keen interest and was a staunch Conservative.
For the past twenty years, Mr. Newton made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Eldridge, of Whitfield, where he will be sorely missed. Left to mourn the passing of a loving father is one daughter, Margaret Eleanor (Mrs. Ed Eldridge) of Whitfield; two sons, Joseph Raymond, of Midland, and John Lidsay, of Toronto; also five grandchildren, of whom he was very fond - Maureen, Terrence, Brian and Lynn Eldridge, and Doreen Newton.
Also surviving is one brother, Benjamin, of Shelburne, tha last of a family of thirteen.
The remains rested at the Gamble Funeral Home, Shelburne, where the services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Dobson, rector of Christ Church, Whitfield, on Saturday, May 9th. Interment was in Shelburne Cemetery.
Pallbearers were six nephews: Wilbert Gilroy, John Newton, Clyde Newton, Earl Madill, Stanley Summerfield and Emerson Lindsay.
Beautiful floral tributes were received from the following: Pillow, the family; casket corsage, the grandchildren; wreath, Ben and Margaret; containers, Christ Church, Whitfield; Eva, Emerson and Ronald; Bessie and Stanley Summerfield, Don and Ruth Chadwick; Lydia and Wilbert, Elmer and Dorothy; Pearl, Luella and Ernie; the Neighbors; Reg. and Enfys Perryman; L.O.B.A. No. 739; Caledonia Lodge No. 249, A.F. & A.M., Midland; J. W. Bald and family; Ladies of the 8-to-4 shift at Munroe Acme; sprays, Dorothy and Clyde; John and Mina, Gladys and Earl; Mr. and Mrs. William Allen and family; baskets, Friends of Lindsay's at Munroe Acme; W. H. Thompson, Percy Yates, Dave Latumas, Wilf Mitchell and Harry Myers.
These were carried by close friends of the family, and showed the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
