Botanist. A native of Michigan, Lemmon enlisted into the Union Army in 1862 to fight in the Civil War, serving as a Private in Company E of the 4th Michigan Cavalry. In August 1864 he was taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville prison where he stayed until he was released in 1865. Moving to California after the war, he became interested in botany and began a successful career during which he discovered hundreds of previously unknown plants. In 1876 he met Sara Allen Plummer, whom he married in 1880. In 1888 he was appointed a botanist for the California State Board of Forestry, along with his wife, who was appointed as an artist, posts they both held until 1892.
