Mary Hewett
1922 - 2020

Hewett, Mary 11/14/1922 - 8/15/2020 Traverse City, MI Mary C. Hewett slipped quietly away early Saturday, 15-Aug-2020. She was currently residing at the Samaritas Assisted Living facility in Williamsburg, Mi. Mary was born November 14, 1922 in Ann Arbor, MI. She spent the majority of her life there except for a ten-year period in the 1930s, when her family was in Tucson, AZ , where Mary graduated from high school. Mary married Armand Hewett in 1946, after he returned from the fighting in Europe during WWII. Mary bore five children, James (Jacksonville, FL), Alan (Pataskala, OH), William (Kewadin, MI), Corinne (Church Hill, TN), and Terry (Davis, CA). In addition to raising five children, she was the bookkeeper and office manager for A. P. W. Hewett Real Estate and Property Management, Inc. She was a long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church serving with the Ruth circle and various committees, including church council. Mary also invested significant time visiting troubled boys housed at the W. J. Maxey Boys Training School in Whitmore Lake, MI as well as helping "run the show" for many years at the annual Kiwanis rummage sale in Ann Arbor. After she and Armand retired in 1975 they spent time in various locations - Ann Arbor, Albuquerque, NM., Brighton and Harbor Beach, MI. Mary loved doing her crossword puzzles, reading, and watching the birds while sitting on the porch at Harbor Beach, as she looked for ships sailing up and down the lake . A lover of card games she "played to win". Bridge was a favorite and family members quickly learned how fast she was at double-handed solitaire. A moment's inattention and she'd be out and you'd be sitting with a handful of unplayed cards. In addition to her five children, Mary is survived by 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to thank all those who helped with Mary's care and enriched her life in recent years. Mary instilled a love of nature and animals in all of the children and was steadfast in her support of local and global conservation efforts. Mary will be laid to rest beside Armand in the Washtenong cemetery of Ann Arbor. There will eventually be a celebration of life event when times are more normal. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society of Traverse City, to your local animal rescue organization, or the Audubon Society.
