Obituary:
Mary “Betsy” C. Oakes passed away on Sunday, December 2nd into eternal life at the age of 75. She was born in Washington D.C. on June 6th 1943 to naval officer Lt. Commander Melvin R. Comer and Mary Alma “Mazie” Comer. Betsy moved to Ardmore and attended The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr. In her early years, Betsy was as an avid horseback rider and would attend various fox hunting events in the Birchrunville area. Betsy dedicated many years of charitable service at the Bryn Mawr Hospital Thrift Shop as a third-generation volunteer alongside of her mother and grandmother. Betsy was the embodiment of outward love and expressed it to everyone that she met in kindness of heart and a warm smile. Betsy enjoyed children and would often spend time helping her friends and family raise their children and provide grandmotherly care. Betsy also loved animals, in particular, her bouvier (Charlie) and pug (Rosie.) Betsy is survived by her husband of 36 years John D.F. Oakes, Sr. of Wayne, her sons David R. Schaeffer (MaryBeth) of Chester Springs, Stephen R. Schaeffer (Alli) of Lower Gwynedd, John D.F. Oakes, Jr. of Philadelphia and James E.L. Oakes of Wayne. She was predeceased by her oldest son, Bruce H. Schaeffer, Jr. in 1987. Betsy has 8 loving grandchildren who affectionately refer to her at “Grandma Bets” or just “Grand mom.” A viewing and service will be held on Thursday, December 6th at 10 a.m. at The Ardmore Presbyterian Church on Montgomery Avenue. A private burial service for the family will be held at Paxtang Cemetery in Harrisburg
