Maurice (Maury) Hill, the last cast member and writer of “Space Patrol,” died July 12 in Los Angeles of heart complications. He was 89.
He created the character of Captain Hayward in “Space Patrol,” initially starring and eventually doubling as a writer for the series. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and educated at the U. of Indiana, Hill performed in plays for the troops while serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Ord, California. He rose to the rank of Captain and served his remaining military career in India.
Following his service, he moved to New York, appearing in small theater productions until making his Broadway debut in a small role in “Mr. Roberts,” (l948) starring Henry Fonda. He became a regular on live television, appearing Kraft Theater,” “Suspense” and “Studio 1” shows until he was called to Hollywood to join the new live “Space Patrol” series.
Early in his career, Hill became one of the first actors to volunteer his services recording books for the blind and dyslexic, which he continued for 53 years. He appeared in TV series including a recurring role in “Alice,” “Dragnet” and “Murder She Wrote.” He also appeared in features including “Airplane” and “The Mark of Zorro” and in plays including “Track of Thunder.”
He left no survivors.
