Married Dr. James Beaver Mennell. Titanic Survivor

In January 1911, Elisabeth Walton Allen, an American citizen, became engaged to marry Dr. James Beaver Mennell, a British citizen. She boarded the RMS Titanic in Southampton England as a first class passenger. Her plan was to return home to St. Louis, pack her belongings, settle her affairs and return to England. Her sister Clare was also getting married and they were planning a joint wedding in July 1912.

Traveling with her were her aunt Mrs. Elisabeth Walton Robert, her cousin Miss Georgette Alexandra Madill, and her aunt's maid, Miss Emilie Kreuchen. Elisabeth Walton Allen shared cabin B-5 with her cousin Georgette. Her aunt had cabin B-3 to herself, and her maid was on E-deck. The party traveled under one ticket at a cost of £221, 16s, 9d.

Elisabeth stated that she and her cousin were still awake when Titanic hit an iceberg. Her aunt's maid knocked on the door to tell them that the baggage room was full of water. Knowing the ship had watertight compartments, Elisabeth told her not to worry. The maid left but return a few minutes later to tell Elisabeth that her own E deck was flooded. The ladies received word from the steward that they were to go to the boat deck to prepare for evacuation. They boarded Lifeboat #2 with Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall in charge. It was one of the last lifeboats to leave Titanic and the first to be picked up by the Carpathia.

After such a harrowing experience, Elisabeth dared to sail across the ocean again. She returned to England on White Star Line's RMS Baltic to marry Dr. James Beaver Mennell in July 1912, just three short months of the sinking.

The couple had three sons and made their home first in St. Pancras London and later at Portland Place in Kensington. They lived there well into the 1940s.
