Harry Peter Hass, 87
Harry Peter Hass was born August 8, 1920, the son of Leon and Amalia Hansen Hass. He died Wednesday, August 15, 2007 at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa at the age of eighty-seven. Harry was born in Manning, Iowa and received his education there, graduating with the class of 1938. He entered the United States Navy, later working in the steel mills in Chicago. September 30, 1942, Harry was united in marriage to Anita Danielsen in Rockport, Missouri. The couple returned to Manning, living there for a short time before moving to Denison in 1943. He worked as a delivery man for Coca-Cola, and later, became a First Sergeant and the Administrative-Supply Technician, and also a recruiter for the Iowa National Guard at the Denison Armory, serving in that capacity for 31 years. In his spare time, Harry enjoyed socializing with friends and acquaintances over a cup of coffee. He was a member of the Optimist Club, was a Volunteer Firefighter, and sang with Denison's "The Happiness Express" Barbershop Quartet. He was also a member of the Cultural Diversity Committee, played slow-pitch softball and coached Little-League Baseball. He announced sporting events on KDSN for many years and was involved with many parades. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anita "Babe" in 1996; his wife's parents, Ralph and Anita Helen Marie Mahoney Danielsen and Augusta Cassebarth Danielsen; one son-in-law, Keith Haynes; two brothers-in-law, Don Danielsen; and Ralph "Sonny" Danielsen and his wife, Irene; two sisters-in-law, Mary DeVinney; and Barbara Jane Danielsen. He is survived by his children, Portia Haynes of Van Meter, Iowa; Brynne Cue and her husband, David of Denison; Kirk of Harlan, Iowa; and Nile and his wife, Jane of Rossville, Georgia; eleven grandchildren, Bill Haynes and his wife, Lynne; Noel Haynes and his wife, Laurie; Cameron Haynes and his wife, Evette; Rise Drake; Lerynne West; Brent Haynes and his wife, Janel; Gillian Gillespie and her husband, Chad; Kollin Haynes and his wife, Karen; Travis and Trevor Hass and Colton Elsea; thirteen great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; one brother, LeRoy Hass and his wife, Ruth of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; his sisters-in-law, Edith "Hon" Stamm and her husband, Jake of North Platt, Nebraska; and Judy Danielsen of Santa Clara, California; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held 1:30 P.M., Monday, August 20, 2007 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Gary Witte officiated the services and grave side rites held at Oakland Cemetery in Denison. Vocalist Jerry Peterman sang "The Old Rugged Cross," and vocalist Jane Gronau sang "Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me," and "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound." Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Cameron & Evette Haynes; Gillian & Chad Gillespie; Bill & Lynne Haynes; Colton Elsea; Rise Drake; Travis Hass; Kollin & Karen Haynes; Noel & Laurie Haynes; Brent & Janel Haynes, Lerynne West; and Trevor Hass. Those serving as pallbearers were Dennis Holdsworth; Fred Worrell; Bob Means; Leroy Nemitz; Phil Pletcher; Roger Jensen; and Al Hester. Military honors were provided by the Iowa National Guard. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for fellowship and lunch at the Denison Community Building. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
