Matthias (Matthew) Vogt was born in Gruenberg, Germany on 31 January 1841. A respected resident of the Clare and Blyth districts, in which he lived for 50 years. As a young man he served in the German army in the war against Demark (1864) and the German - Austrian war (1866) and the Franco - Prussian war (1870) he was at the siege of Matz when that town surrendered. Mr Vogt was married twice. He married Jadwega (Hedwig) Ulralba and they had eight children together. He then married Anne Pawelski and they had 11 children together. His first wife accompanied him to Australia from Germany with four children in 1878. He died on 11 January 1929 in South Australia at the age of 87 and was buried in the Sevenhill Cemetery.

Note - He arrived in South Australia on the Elisabeth on 10 Jun 1878 - listed on manifest Matthius 37 & wife Hedwig (Jadwiga) 36 children Catharina 2, Matthius 7, Agnes 9, Barbara 10. also on the Elisabeth were Carl Vogt 25, & Louise 25 (wife of Carl) children Eduard (infant), Herman 2
