Gwen Nadine Steinmetz was born December 13, 1947 in Independence, Kansas to Lloyd H. and Vola M. (Dunkin) Hoff. She attended school in Newton, Kansas, graduating in the class of 1965. In 1967, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa.

Gwen was united in marriage with Jerry H. Steinmetz on September 11, 1976 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Des Moines.

The couple moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in June 1982. Gwen attended Augustana University in Sioux Falls. She worked for Citicorp as a Customer Service Representative from 1982-1989. In November 1989, they moved to Yorba Linda, California and she worked for Beckman Employees Credit Union as a Branch Manager from 1990-1994. They moved back to Des Moines in April 1994 and Gwen worked for Iowa Transit System (ITS-Shazam) June 1994-September 1999. She finished her work career as a Customer Service Representative for WestBank from September 1999-January 2017.

Gwen Steinmetz passed away on November 28, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Gwen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Some of Gwen's hobbies and interests included researching ancestry and traveling. She loved a good road trip. Gwen loved her family deeply, especially her grandchildren. She was very excited and blessed to have 3 great grandchildren: Keira, Jada and her first great-grandson, Holden. Gwen had an optimistic, bubbly personality. She was outgoing, had a wonderful sense of humor, always had a smile and she had the gift of gab. Because of these wonderful qualities she had many friends and family who loved her and she will be greatly missed by them all.

Gwen is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jerry; daughter, Laura (Chad) Axtell; granddaughters: Kayla Smiley, Brianna (Colin) Hofferber, and Nicole Axtell; stepchildren: Terri (Brian) Nebel and Micheal Steinmetz; step-grandchildren: Max Nebel, Justin Nebel, Lance Steinmetz, and Ryan Steinmetz; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services 11 am December 4, 2018, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 8301 Aurora Avenue,Urbandale, Iowa with visitation at the church one hour earlier.

Merle Hay Funeral Home in service to the family.

Memorials in Gwen's honor may be given to Komen of Greater Iowa.
