Hazel Lizzie was the daughter of Albert Gates and Alice M. Walters.

She married James H. Hartenstein on December 3, 1935. Together they had one daughter. Following a 2 week illness, James passed away. Hazel married Lloyd Vernon Bixler on February 14, 1943. The couple had two daughters.
