He married Barbara Hoffman, on July 6, 1635, who was the daughter of Christopher Hoffman, who he had studied music under, when he was younger. But she died in 1636, shortly after the birth of their stillborn child.

He remarried Hedwig Lammerhirt. They had several children, including three sons who became talented musicians: Johann Christian (born 1640); Johann Aegidius (born 1645); and Johann Nicolaus (born 1653).

The musicial family that Johann founded in Erfurt was so respected and so substantial that they filled most of the positions for musicians in the town of Erfurt, over the next couple of hundred years. Even when no Bach's actually lived in Erfurt anymore, all of the town musicians were called, "Bach's."
