Ralph D. Callister, 73, insurance man and former Utah state legislator, died Friday of cancer at the home of a daughter in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Callister was an official of the National Association of Independent Insurance Agents and its Utah chapter for many years. From 1941 to 1957 he was director and member of the executive committee of the UAIA; vice president, UAIA, 1942-43, and president from 1943 to 1944. He was the state national director of the NAIA from 1950 to 1956 and from 1954 to 1955 was chairman of the NAIA Dues Allocation Formula Committee. He was twice awarded the NAIA's presidential citation for service in the insurance business.
He served in the Utah State Legislature from 1945 to 1947 and was a Republican member of its Interim Insurance Committee which drafted the state's current insurance code.
Mr. Callister received the national Woodworth Memorial Award as an outstanding insurance man in 1962. He served multiple terms as chairman of the Far West Insurance Agents Conference and served on the NAIA executive committee and three-man finance committee for many years. He was a past member of the American Agency System and the Utah All Industry Legislative Committee.
Born in Salt Lake City June 13, 1904 to Thomas Alfred and Bertha James Callister, he married Margaret Rager December 31, 1925 in Salt Lake City. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Callister is survived by his wife, daughters, Mrs. Wayne A. (Marilyn) Shaw, Mrs. Blaine F. (Joan) Bullough, all of Salt Lake City; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Dr. Thomas Kenneth, San Marino, California; sisters, Mrs. Ella Archer, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Mildred Willemsen, Carmel, California.
Graveside services will be Tuesday noon at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
