William was born to Maria May (b. in England) and Jacob Haer (b. in Ohio) in 1882.

He married Laura Flickinger in Summit, Ohio, United States on October 15, 1914.

According to his WWI draft card, William had gray eyes and dark brown hair.

During his life he worked as the plant foreman in the Seiberling Tire and Rubber Company mill room.

He died in an automobile-streetcar accident in 1925 shortly before Christmas. The street car crashed head on into the car which William was driving. William and his friend William Strohl had been coming home from Barberton's crippled children's school where they had been dressing up as Santa to entertain the children.
