In 1912, he was driving a cart of apples into Akron and was hit by a street car. The car knocked him from the wagon and under the car. He was not seriously injured and folks gathered around to discuss the best method to get him from underneath the car. Someone suggested that a jack should be retrieved from the rubber company nearby and others ran to get it. As they waited a second street car pulled to a halt behind the first. The conductor jumped from his car and before anyone could stop him he backed the car over John. He died later at the city hospital of a crushed chest and a fractured skull.
