Many will remember her years as a first grade teacher, and later a special education teacher, in Amherst County Schools. Lucy loved music and was very active in community groups such as the Fine Arts Center and the Jefferson Choral Society, as well as the choir at Rivermont Presbyterian Church. In her retirement years she enjoyed teaching a water aerobics class at the YMCA and many volunteer activities. Until her health began to decline, she continued to love, serve and care for others.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents; her 2nd husband, Burton Stewart; her brothers, Ronald Fairhall Smith and Edmund Joseph Smith; and her sisters, Winnifred Smith Esselstyn and Sarah Smith Hutchinson.She is survived by her brother, Gerald Lloyd Smith of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and her sister, Marjorie Smith Fincher of Ripon, Calif.; her children, Mary Beth Pickett Drake (Peter) of Rockbridge County, Va., Robert Chisholm Pickett (Fran) of Satellite Beach, Fla., Kathryn Pickett Tucker (Barry) of Elon, Va., and Allen Lloyd Pickett (Tracy) of Richmond, Va.; stepchildren, Vernon Stewart (Fay) of Winston Salem, N.C., and Stephanie Stewart of Lynchburg, Va.; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was married 1st to: Robert T Pickett, III...They were married @1950 and divorced in the 1970's
The family will greatly miss Lucy, but rejoices that she is now free from her suffering and at home with her Lord. We are grateful to the staff of Westminster Canterbury and Centra Hospice for all the loving care that Lucy received. A service in celebration of her life will take place at a later date.
