Justice Area Pioneer Woman Dies at 97

Mollie Justice Stone, a member of the first pioneer family to settle in the Justice area, died Sunday in a Man hospital following a long illness.

She was born in the spring of 1875 in the little community which bears her family name. The community was named for its first settler, her father, the late W. E. Justice. Her mother was the late Susan Cook Justice.

She married Sidney Stone, an early surveyor in the area who plied his trade before Mingo County was separated from Logan County in 1895. He preceded her in death in 1917. The couple reared one daughter, Dixie Hatfield of Justice with whom Mrs. Stone was making her home at the time of her death.

The United Methodist Church was her membership church.

Survivors in addition to her daughter include one sister, Eva Justice Damron of Dunbar; four grandchildren, Edna Viars, Gretta Flo Hatfield and James Blake Hatfield of Seattle, Wash., and Arthur Ray Hatfield of Bluefield; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Wednesday in Justice United Medthodist Church with Rev. Earl Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in the Justice family cemetery.
