David Allen Bowersock, Jr. was born to David Allen Bowersock and Etta G. Bowersock in Oklahoma. As a teen he was noted locally for his oratory skills, and shortly after his seventeenth birthday David enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a machinist by trade. He met and married Benet P. Cordeiro of Hayward in Alameda County, California. They married in Reno, Nevada in 1941. The young couple set up David's parents in a new home at Long Beach, California, then shipped off to Hawaii. David and Benet were living in Honolulu, Hawaii during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. They remained in Hawaii throughout World War II, and during the interim two children (David Allen Bowersock III b. 1942 and Martha Benet Bowersock b.1945) were born to the couple. After peace had been declared, the Navy stationed David on the east coast; a third child, Pete, was born in Rhode Island. In 1950, the Bowersock family relocated to Kenwood, California, where they bought a chicken ranch. David contracted MS and became permanently disabled, and the family subsequently left, settling in Santa Cruz in 1956. The progression of his illness was such that complications forced his removal to the veterans hospital in Palo Alto during the ensuing year. He succumbed to multiple sclerosis in 1976 at the age of 59.
