He was a son of James Barton Longacre
and Eliza Stiles. He was a Methodist minister. He was assistant pastor of the American Chapel in Paris from 1860 to 1862. Inheriting his father's artistic ability, his sketches and watercolors were occasionally exhibited. He wrote poetry, was a frequent letter writer, and kept a diary from 1851 until the time of his death. During that same period he also kept sketchbooks of landscapes, decorative disigns, and other works. He travelled the United States, Europe, North Africa and the Near East.
