Born on a Calumet county farm Sept. 17, 1882, John Jacob Leukel attended school there, with the late Dr. William Hipke. later a co- founder of the Marshfield Clinic, as his first teacher.
He worked on his father's farm for two years after completing his schooling and then spent five years in the West, mostly in Denver, where he was employed as a rural mail carrier, had charge of an ambulance service for an omnibus company, and worked for a time as an embalmer.
Mr. Leukel was married to Miss Anna Cassin of Adell, Sheboygan county, at Adell on June 1, 1910. The following year they came to Lincoln township and settled on the farm where they built up an exceptional herd of purebred Holsteins.
He was secretary of the North Lincoln Telephone Company during its existence, and was secretary of the Marshfield Holstein Club a number of years ago.
Mr. Leukel is survived by his wife and three foster children, Nick J. Ilinski, Sacramento, Calif., and Joseph Ilinski, Stockton, Calif., and Miss Catherine Ilinski, Port land, Ore.; a brother, Robert Leukel, Arlington, Va.; and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Jones, Oakland, Calif.
Five sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with the Rev. Walter J. Dillenburg officiating. Burial will take place in Hillside cemetery.
Beginning Saturday noon the body will lie in state at the Rembs Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday by the Rosary Society. The general rosary service will be held there at 8:15 p.m. Sunday.
