Edward Shoemaker
Edward Shoemaker, a lifelong Hood River, Ore., resident, died Nov. 21, 2008, at Providence Brookside Manor. He was 93 years of age.
Edward was born Dec. 30, 1914, in Hood River, Ore., to Kent and Effie Shoemaker. He was raised in the area attending grades one through 12 in Hood River.
On Feb. 11, 1943, Ed enlisted in the Army and served in the 831st Engineer Battalion. After his honorable discharge in December 1944 he returned to Hood River to work on the family orchard in Pine Grove.
In addition to his work in the family orchard, Ed also did various other jobs in Hood River; he taught swimming lessons at Koberg Beach and was also a lifeguard at the Hood River swimming pool.
He was an active member of the Elks Lodge and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles for more than 52 years. Ed has also been a member of the American Legion for more than 60 years.
In 1959 Ed married Betty Wols during Oregon’s Centennial and they traveled across the United States on a seven-month “honeymoon.” They had been married for 48 years when Betty passed away in 2007.
Ed is survived by two stepsons, Warren Wols and Karl Wols; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and other distant family and many friends.
