Nelle Carlisle Kreider was born 22 July 1883 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the eldest child of Howard Leslie and Mary Louise Clarke Kreider. She was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where she attended the public schools before enrolling in Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois in 1900. Nelle married George Green Tayloe, son of James Wynns and Elizabeth Blair Green Tayloe on 30 January 1905 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Omaha. After their honeymoon, the couple resided in Memphis, Tennessee, where George Tayloe and his brother, Alfred, owned the Tayloe Paper Company. The Tayloes lived in Memphis for the rest of their lives, where they were prominent members of Memphis society and the city's business community.
