Augusta Lucretia Taylor was born in Phoenix, Arizona to James Augustus and Lola Frances (Lansdon) Taylor.

As a child, she went by the nickname of "Gussie" and as an adult, by the nickname of "Lou".

Gussie had two siblings; an older brother, Francis "Buddy", and a younger sister, Lola. She also had an older half-brother, Leroy Augustus Taylor from her father's first marriage.

When Gussie was four years old, her father, a newspaper printer, was arrested for the murder of a local Phoenix fireman and was sentenced to life at the territorial prison in Florence. He was pardoned by the governor of Arizona just shy of four years into his sentence. Gussie was eight years old at the time of his release.

During her father's incarceration, Gussie's parents divorced. Her mother eventually married James Ernest Hall, a carpenter and home builder. To this union, three children, James, Jr., Anna Laura, and Woodrow, were born.

In 1927, Gussie (Lou) married Don Leroy "Doc" Sandy and the following year a son was born to them in Phoenix.

In 1928, Doc and Lou moved to San Francisco where Doc accepted a position as a mechanic. In 1929, they welcomed their second child, a daughter, and in 1932, their third child, another daughter, was born.

In 1935, Lou and Doc returned to Phoenix where their marriage would end in divorce.

By 1940, Doc had remarried and Lou was now living and working in Los Angeles with her children, now 12, 11, and 8.

Lou married Carlton Zeme Moore in 1942 and they made their home in the Los Angeles area until the early 1950's, when they moved to Redondo Beach.

Lou passed away in Long Beach on Monday, May 19, 1975 at the age of 68 following injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. Her husband, Carlton, died three years later on September 7, 1978 in Torrance.
